some cleaning progress.
half and half after just the vacuuming
after the vacuuming, the kids and I set up a relay team. I washed all the hard surfaces with soapy water (dish soap, for the degreasing), then my son wiped it all dry, then my daughter hit all the neglected plastics with so SO much shiny maker.
whats not immediately evident in the pictures, is the quantity of dog fur. I had to vacuum once to get all the dirt and chunks, then brush/scrape all the fabrics with a stiff brush to loosen the fur, then vacuum again.
and because the paint is pretty bad, I took a minute polish a little test patch. I taped it off and just rubbed it by hand. came out pretty good. it’s a small car, but the paint work will be a mountainous job
this may have once been a well loved car, but it certainly hasnt been cleaned inside or out in many MANY years.

While you’ve got everything out, this is a good time to steam/shampoo the carpets and headliner. If you don’t do it now, you never will, and it will get out so many antigens and smells. You can get cheap steamers at Target like the Bissell Little Green or Little Green Junior.

I took my carpets out and threw them in the industrial sized washing machine at the laundromat. You could see the mud coming out of them through the front load viewer thingy. It was very satisfying to watch.

It’s a good feeling isn’t it? When it’s done and everything looks so much better.

You mean the actual carpet, not just the mats? I thought that stuff was glued down pretty well.

Land Rover has a system of captive bolts poking up from the floor. The carpet is held down to them by plastic caps that screw onto these bolts. A lot of mine were rusted and I was doing a lot of crawling around on the bare floor, so I eliminated mine with an angle grinder. Now my carpets are held in with gravity.
Also, the carpet comes out in 5 sections instead of one big piece, that makes it easier too.

Early 90’s Civic? Looks just just like the one I had (though it was never quite that dirty)
